New Delhi: Thinking of applying for a passport, you might want to check the new application process before heading to the passport office. The Indian government has brought a new rule regarding the procedure of issuance of new passports.
As per the new rule, from August 5, individuals applying for a fresh new passport will have to upload the required supporting documents in Digilocker at Passport Seva Kendras along with Post office Passport Seva Kendra PSKs/POPSKs before submitting their applications digitally at www.passportindia.gov.in.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that a new rule has been made to reduce the time taken in the passport application process It is also mandatory for applicants to upload their important documents on Digilocker.
Why Digilocker?
An initiaive under Digital India by the Indian Government aims at making India digitally empowered. DigiLocker goes parallel in fulling the country’s vision for providing citizens with a secure platform to upload their important documents on a public cloud.
DigiLocker’s Benefits
Now that the government has made it easy for the applicants’ documents to be stored digitally, carrying original documents will not be necessary anymore.
The DigiLocker streamlines the application processing time and minimises the time taken to verify documents at Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras located in different parts of the country.
With this, the government is also accepting Aadhar documents through DigiLocker for the online application process.
Documents needed
The Government of India has provided a list of acceptable documents, which will serve as proof of residence. The supporting documents are Aadhaar Card, Current Ration Card, Driving License, Electricity Bill, Income Tax Assessment and others.
