It is often a dream for individuals to secure a good and stable job. In India, particularly, if someone is employed in the government sector, it is believed that they are well-established. Today, we discuss Dr. Kamini Singh, who has not only left her government job but has also established herself as a successful businesswoman.
Moringa (Drumstick) is widely available at vegetable shops, and we often use it in various dishes. Dr. Kamini Singh, a horticulture scientist, grows organic moringa. It is commonly used in ‘Saambhar,’ which is served with idli and dosa.
Kamini’s team is developing products like soap, oil, mosquito repellent, tea and moringa powder from the plant. She claims that all products are organic.
She is employed with Central Institute For Subtropical Horticulture (CISH). During her job, she developed interest towards farming. After serving the organisation for seven years, she quit the job to pursue research in Moringa. Later, She got an offer from a private company which was related to farming. Here she came in contact with farmers.
Kamini started a pilot project with farmers on moringa farming. She chose moringa because it doesn’t require chemicals to grow and can be cultivated in any season. She mentioned that the plant is rich in minerals and is used as an antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic.
In 2019, Kamini launched her own organization and began developing moringa powder, capsules, soap, and more. Initially, she developed only moringa powder and sold it through a canopy stall in the market. She sold her products under the brand name ‘Doctor.’
Kamini came to know about the Agri-Business Incubator at IIT BHU. The university encourages young entrepreneurs in the field of agriculture through grants. Kamini too secured a grant of Rs 25 lakh to which she used to expand her business.
Today, Kamini’s business is flourishing, and she is experiencing success along with her team members and farmers. Kamini says her company’s current turnover is Rs 1.75 crore in FY2024, and it is expected to reach Rs 2.50 crore by 2025.
