Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) is the flagship company of the giant Group, specializing in manufacturing automotive vehicles, farm equipment, and spare parts. The company has a strong presence in both domestic and international markets and its product lineup includes trucks, tractors, jeeps, defense vehicles, SUVs, and electric vehicles.
M&M was founded in October 1945 headquartered in Mumbai. The company is now led by Chairman Anand Mahindra, the grandson of Jagdish Chandra. Currently, the company is famous for its automobiles, it actually started as a steel trading business, in partnership with UK-based suppliers.
How Mahindra & Mahindra Got Its Name?
M&M was founded by two brothers, Jagdish Chandra and Kailash Chandra, along with their partner Ghulam Mohammed. The company was originally called Mahindra & Mohammed, but was renamed Mahindra & Mahindra after Ghulam Mohammed departed to pursue a career in politics in Pakistan.

M&M announced to go public on June 15, 1955, and its shares were listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange the following year, in 1956. Pope Paul VI made a historic arrival in Bombay (now Mumbai) on December 3, 1964, during the 38th International Eucharistic Congress. He rode in a specially manufactured Jeep by M&M, which gave immense popularity to the company.
Currently, the company dominates the Indian tractor market, holding the top spot as the largest-selling tractor brand in India for an impressive four decades. M&M became the leader in the Indian tractor market in 1983. In 1997, Anand took the reins as Managing Director of M&M.
Furthermore, M&M holds a dominant position in the Indian automotive market. Moreover, the company has the popular Scorpio, XUV3XO, XUV700, Bolero etc. lineup in its portfolio. To tap into the urban market, the company introduced the Bolero in 2000, which became India’s best-selling UV. The Bolero held this top spot for an impressive 10 years straight.
