Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate ‘Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport‘ to the nation today, May 2. This Rs 8,900-crore deep-water port has been developed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), Adani Group company and India’s largest port developer, under the public-private partnership model.
Notably, the Vizhinjam International Transhipment Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport is an ambitious project taken up by Government of Kerala. The port is currently being developed in a landlord model with a Public Private Partnership component on a design, build, finance, operate and transfer basis. Adani Group has commenced its construction on 5th December 2015.

According to the official press release, this is the country’s first dedicated container transhipment port, representing the transformative advancements being made in India’s maritime sector as part of the unified vision of Viksit Bharat. Furthermore, the release also noted that the port is strategically important, and has been identified as a key priority project that will contribute to strengthening India’s position in global trade, enhancing logistics efficiency, and reducing reliance on foreign ports for cargo transhipment.
Kerala’s Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Ministers Suresh Gopi and George Kurian, State Ministers Saji Cheriyan, V Sivankutty, GR Anil, Opposition leader V D Satheesan, MPs Shashi Tharoor and A.A. Rahim, Mayor Arya Rajendran, and former Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar will also attend the event alongside with PM Modi.

AS Suresh Babu, former MD & CEO of Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL), said, “In 2014, the fourth tender was out, and almost five leading companies qualified in that tender. Only three of them purchased the tender documents. But finally, the price bid – Adani had submitted and the agreement was signed in September 2015 and started in December 2015.”

He further said, “It is a very good thing that we’re getting an international transhipment port here. This is a project for India, and Adani being the concessionaire, I am sure that with their expertise, they’ll be able to do a good job here. By seeing the difficulties faced by the concessionaires, only Adani could do this project because they know Indian and Kerala’s conditions, and they have expertise in this field.”
