ITR Filing Due Date Extension: The deadline for filing the Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the current assessment year is September 15, 2025. The Income Tax Department has earlier extended the due date for 45 days starting July 30, 2025. However, there is a growing demand among taxpayers and various stakeholders to extend the due date again for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for FY2024-25.
Various tax association groups, CAs, and tax experts have cited technical glitches on the government’s e-filing portal. Additionally, a delay in issuing Form 16 and Form 26AS, disruptions in the server, etc, have been reported widely. Amidst this, taxpayers, who are struggling to complete their returns, are requesting the Ministry of Finance and the ITD to grant an extension for filing ITR.
The new due date, i.e., September 15, 2025, applies to individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), and taxpayers with non-audited accounts. There is a possibility that the due date for filing the ITR may be extended in the coming days. However, the government is yet to officially respond to the demands.
CA Ritu Gupta has urged for an extension of the deadline. In a post on X, she wrote, “Utilities released late, heavy rainfall everywhere, clashing due dates with audit dates. We are chartered accountants and not AI, who can work in adverse conditions. Requesting the Finance Ministry and Income Tax Department to kindly extend the due date to 31st October.”
