India’s Patent Surge: Double the Filings in Just 5 Years, Now 6th Globally

India's Intellectual Property (IP) office now stands second globally in trademark registrations, with 3.2 million registrations filed in 2023. Over this, the country's Patent-to-GDP ratio has surged from 144 to 381 over the decade.

Double the Filings in Just 5 Years, Now 6th Globally

India Patent Filings: India is growing by leaps and bounds across the world in major sectors. One major sector among them is patent filing. According to reports by WIPO, released on 7 November 2024, the reports suggest growth in the nation and the achievement of a milestone.

With India’s patent filing growth, it appears in the top 10 list for the first time ever, contributing to a 17.7% global increase in 2023. Over 35 lakh (3.5 million) patents were filed worldwide, with India playing a significant role. Experts say that India’s strengthened intellectual property policies and growing investments in research and development are behind this growth.

Piyush Goyal, Commerce and Inustry Minister posted on X, calling India ‘a global leader’. The post said- “A global leader in innovation. India has exhibited a remarkable growth in the patents, designs & trademarks filings according to @WIPO Indicators 2024 report,”

“For over a decade now, the Modi government has nurtured a thriving ecosystem for innovation and IP protection. This has not only driven the country’s ascent globally, but also fueled opportunities for our startups, entrepreneurs, and researchers,” said Goyal.

According to WIPO, India saw the fastest growth in patent filing among 20 nations. The nation recorded 15.7% increase in 2023, marking a double digit growth over half a decade. In addition, with an increase of 6.1% (64,480 filings), India ranked 4th globally in trademark filings for the same year.

The nation ranks 4th globally in trademark filing in 2023, with a 6.1% increase. Total of 90% of these filings were from the residents. Top sectors contributing to the growth are- health, agriculture, and clothing. India also moved up-to 10th position globally for industrial design filings, with a 36.4% rise in 2023. The country is moving towards positive growth in creative designs with textile and accessories, tools and machine, health and pharma, creating half of the figures in the filing.
