India launches e-Passport: In a significant development, India has recently launched the electronic passport (e-Passport). The e-passport is considered to be the most modern travel document designed to improve security and ease the immigration process. The special feature that makes this document superior is that, unlike a regular passport, the e-passport includes a small embedded chip that stores biometric information such as fingerprints and facial scans.
What is an electronic passport (e-Passport)?
The e-passport has a chip that stores your biometric information. This chip is protected inside the passport’s cover, which also features a special gold emblem, setting it apart from traditional passports.
Key Features and Advantages
- Enhanced Security: The biggest advantage of the e-passport is its advanced security. The embedded electronic chip makes it nearly impossible to forge or tamper with.
- Faster Immigration Checks: With a simple scan of the chip, border officials can instantly verify a traveller’s identity, making entry and exit at airports much quicker.
- Globally Accepted: The e-passport meets international standards, ensuring smooth travel and acceptance in countries across the world.
- Prevents Identity Theft: The digital chip helps protect citizens’ personal data, reducing the chances of identity theft or misuse.
- Safer Travel Experience: Overall, the e-passport adds a strong layer of protection, making travel more secure and convenient for everyone.
e-Passport: Who Can Apply?
The eligibility for applying for an e-passport remains the same. Any Indian citizen who meets the standard passport eligibility criteria can apply for the e-passport. Right now, e-passports are only available at certain Passport Seva Offices in India. The government plans to make them available at more locations soon. People who want an e-passport should check if their nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) provides this service.
