Meta-owned WhatsApp keeps rolling out new feature updates. Used by millions across the globe, this app has become a necessity. Updates related to privacy, like app lock and locking private chats, have been launched in the past.
WhatsApp shows if someone is online or offline, and when they last used the app. You can see this at the top, under the person’s name, while chatting with them. As long as the person is using WhatsApp, even just scrolling, it will show them as ‘online’
WhatsApp lets you hide your online status, so others can’t see when you were last on the app. This helps protect your privacy.
How to Hide Your Online Status on WhatsApp
- Open WhatsApp and tap the three dots in the top right corner.
- Choose ‘Settings’ from the menu.
- Tap ‘Privacy’, then select ‘Last Seen & Online’.
- Choose who can see your Last Seen and Online status. You’ll see these options:
- Everyone – All WhatsApp users can see your status.
- My Contacts – Only people saved in your phone contacts can see it.
- Nobody – No one will be able to see your status.
- My Contacts Except… – You can block specific people from seeing your status.
Important Things to Know
- If you hide your Last Seen or Online status from someone, you also won’t be able to see theirs.
- Even if you hide your online status, people can still see when you are typing.
- You can also change the Read Receipts setting. This lets you choose if others can see when you’ve read their messages or not.

You can lock certain chats so no one else can open them without permission. These chats lock by themselves after some time.
You can also hide your profile picture from people who aren’t in your contacts or from specific people you choose.
