The Aadhaar card is one of the necessary documents for receiving benefits under various state-sponsored schemes. Many public and private authorities, including those that provide KYC services, require the card in order to do so. The question of whether an NRI (Non-Resident Indian) can apply for an Aadhaar card is frequently raised.

According to UIDAI, an NRI with a valid Indian passport can apply at any Aadhaar kendra.

Here are 10 UIDAI steps for an NRI to follow for getting Aadhaar card:

  • Visit your nearest Aadhaar Kendra
  • Carry your valid Indian passport
  • Fill required details in the enrollment form
  • It is mandatory for NRIs to provide their email ID
  • The declaration is slightly different for NRI enrollment. Read the following and sign it on your enrollment form
  • Tell your operator to enrol you as NRI
  • Give passport  to the operator as your identity proof
  • After identity proof, complete the biometric process
  • Make sure to verify all details on screen before submitting it to the operator
  • A receipt or enrollment slip bearing your 14-digit enrollment ID and a date-and-time stamp should be saved.

After completing the process, you can check the status at https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/CheckAadhaarStatus. According to UIDAI, you can provide another legitimate document or documents as proof of your address and date of birth in addition to your passport. If the address on your passport has changed, you must provide the updated Indian address as well as a current Proof of Address (PoA) that is on the list of UIDAI-acceptable documents.
