New Delhi: Indian passports are issued by the Ministry of External Affairs of the Government of India, which has 543 passport offices across the country.
In today’s times, holding a passport has become a crucial need to verify one’s identity and nationality, issued by a country’s government, for the purpose of international travel.
Basic details such as the bearer’s name, place of birth, date of birth, date of issue, date of expiry, passport number, photo and signature are needed to fill out the passport application.
After the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, the issuance of passports was discontinued and was only applicable to “respectable” people. Only in the year 1967, the Supreme Court ruled that every citizen had the right to a passport.
There are 3 kinds of passports that are issued at present
- Ordinary Passport- Issued to ordinary citizens
- Official Passport- issued to individuals representing the Government of India and members of the Indian Armed Forces
- Diplomatic Passport- issued to Indian diplomats, Members of Parliament, Members of the Union Council of Ministers and to certain high-ranking government officials
