The 56th Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council meeting held in the national capital, led by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday. The new GST rates will be implemented from September 22. It has been decided that there will now be only three GST slabs — 5%, 18% and 40%, while the 12% and 28% slabs have been abolished.

The wide ranging reforms will improve lives of our citizens and ensure ease of doing business for all, especially small traders and businesses.”

After the meeting, Punjab Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said, “Now there are three slabs – 5%, 18% and a special slab. One slab has been removed. We said the compensation cess should be increased, but the Centre did not agree.”

After 56th GST Council meeting, Himachal Pradesh Minister Rajesh Dharmani said, “Unanimously, everyone has agreed in favour of GST rate rationalisation. Now there will be three slabs. Effectively, it will be 5% and 18% percent. 12% and 28% have been abolished. There will be 40% on luxury goods.”

Uttar Pradesh Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna said, ” A consensus has been reached and everyone has agreed on the rationalisation of GST rates. Now, 5% and 18% slabs will be applicable.”
