Google is planning to invest billions of dollars in Tamil Nadu to build smartphone manufacturing facilities. The company aims to expand its manufacturing operations in India, specifically focusing on Tamil Nadu. Google plans to initiate the assembly of Pixel phones in the state by setting up new production lines in partnership with Foxconn Technology Group, a Taiwanese contract manufacturer, sources familiar with the matter reported.
In addition, Google’s Wing subsidiary is anticipated to start assembling drones in Tamil Nadu.
Sources mentioned in the report stated that a delegation from the Tamil Nadu government, led by Minister for Industries TRB Rajaa and senior executives, held discussions with senior management at Google in the US to promote their state as a preferred manufacturing hub.
As of now, there has been no official confirmation from Google or Foxconn regarding these developments.
Google’s decision to ramp up its device manufacturing in India mirrors the strategic moves of companies like Apple Inc., which are seeking to reduce geopolitical risks by diversifying away from China.
This decision is particularly beneficial for Tamil Nadu, which is aiming to transition into advanced manufacturing. Last October, Google had announced its plans to commence local manufacturing of Pixel smartphones in India, beginning with the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.

The company had mentioned ongoing talks with both domestic and international manufacturers for the local production of its high-end smartphones, although specifics were not disclosed.
This effort is aimed at increasing the availability of Pixel smartphones throughout India, with the initial devices expected to be released to the market in 2024.
Google’s recent actions underscore Tamil Nadu’s potential as a hub for advanced manufacturing. The state is already a significant center for Apple’s expanding manufacturing network in India, supported by the presence of Foxconn, Pegatron, and Tata.
Earlier, Google had partnered with personal computer maker HP to manufacture Chromebooks at the Flex facility in Chennai.
Tamil Nadu currently leads in electronics exports, with exports totaling $9.56 billion, accounting for nearly a third of the nation’s total exports in this sector.
