Fuel Consumption Soar: Diesel, Petrol, Aviation Fuel and LPG See Significant Hike- Check Details

India’s fuel consumption today increased in the month of November 2024. According to provisional data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC), petrol sales grew by 9.2 percent year-on-year. The quantity of petrol sold was 3,148 thousand metric tonnes (TMT). Whereas, the sales of diesel grew by 8.4 percent. The quantity of diesel sold was 8,158 thousand metric tonnes (TMT).

Diesel And Petrol

Diesel retained its crown of being the most consumed fuel by a significant margin. Diesel had the largest chunk of India’s fuel basket, significantly leading its position of being India’s most consumed fuel. This is evident from the data provided by (PPAC) that diesel sales grew by 8.4 percent. Another takeaway from this data is the increased consumption of Diesel from the activity in transportation sector and industrial operations.

Compared to November 2023, all key petroleum products recorded year-on-year growth in November 2024. Petrol consumption increased by 19.5 percent compared to November 2022, while diesel usage rose by 5.1 percent for the same period.

Aviation Turbine Fuel

The Aviation Turbine fuel segment (ATF) also showed increased consumption, demonstrating the revival of air travel post Covid-19. The data provided by Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) showed a 7.7 percent increase in consumption year-on-year, amounting to 743 hundred metric tonnes.

Similarly, Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) that is heavily used in households across India as fuel, also reported an increased consumption. The gas saw an 7.3 percent rise in demand, totalling 2,765 thousand metric tonnes. This indicates increased usage in industrial applications.

Aviation Turbine Fuel showed a very impressive and significant 20.2 percent growth over a two-year span, indicating the resuming of Aviation sector’s pre-pandemic air traffic levels. The Central government has reduced excise duty by Rs 1.50 almost a week ago, and oil marketing companies successfully absorbed Rs 1.
