Foodies of the nation, assemble! One way or another, we’ve all relied on the food delivery app Zomato to satisfy our cravings, no matter the time of day. Zomato has made a name for itself by bringing food to your doorstep and solving all your craving crises. Let’s see how our favorite food delivery app got its name!
The CEO of Zomato, Deepinder Goyal, shared an interesting story behind the iconic name ‘Zomato.’ We will discover that the food delivery giant, which was previously a restaurant discovery platform, was never intended to be called Zomato at all.
In a recent episode of The Indian Comedy Show, the CEO of Zomato, Deepinder Goyal, along with his wife, Grecia Munoz, joined Kapil Sharma for some fun banter. During their appearance, the couple answered all of Kapil’s curious questions. Kapil expressed his curiosity about the unique name of Goyal’s company. “We’ve heard of potato and tomato, but what’s the story behind the name ‘Zomato’?” Kapil asked. He continued, “I once saw an ad where cricketers Harbhajan Singh and Sreesanth were debating whether it’s ‘Zomato’ or ‘Zomaato.’ So, what’s the real story? Where did the name come from?”
Tomato, Potato, Zomato-
Answering Kapil, the CEO revealed that while he was planning to start the company, he wanted to name it ‘Tomato.’ “This, ‘tomato’ or ‘tomaato,’ whatever you want to say — we wanted that name as the dot com. We wanted ‘tomato.com,’ but we didn’t get that domain,” said Goyal.
---Advertisement---Although when he tried to get the domain name, the idea failed. In a failed attempt to get the creative domain name, Deepinder changed one letter. This is how ‘tomato’ became ‘Zomato’ and the company got the domain name — Zomato.com.
The interesting part is how we all love the name and find uniqueness in it. Who would have thought that a failed attempt to get the desired domain could give us a unique food delivery app.
Deepinder Goyal also shared his love story with his wife, Grecia Munoz, on the show. We often see the couple working together. In the episode, Kapil asked how Goyal met Munoz.
“I was single for a long time. My friends would often set me up on dates but always warned me not to take things too seriously. When Grecia arrived in Delhi, a friend called me and said, ‘There’s a girl here you must meet,’ adding, ‘You’ll end up marrying her.’ It was funny because he was usually the one advising me not to settle down. I met her, and the rest, as they say, is history,” said Goyal.
