Free Aadhaar Biometric Update: In a move aimed at benefitting around 6 crore children, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has offered free Aadhaar biometric update for children. This means children aged between 7 to 15 years can easily access education, scholarships, and DBT schemes as UIDAI has simplified the process by waiving all charges for Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU-1).
Iris Scans, Fingerprints, Photograph Update For Free
These updates include iris scans, fresh fingerprints, and photographs. The free biometric update reminds parents to prevent children from missing out on important Aadhaar-linked services. The photograph, name, date of birth, gender, address, and birth certificate of a child below 5 years of age are required for Aadhaar. While their fingerprints and iris biometrics are not captured for enrolment, as they are not mature enough at that age.
The biometrics are mandatorily required as per existing rules. This is called the first Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU). A child is again required to update biometrics upon attaining 15 years, referred to as the second MBU. The first and second MBUs, if performed between 5-7 and 15-17 years of age, respectively, are free of cost.
Prescribed Fee Of Rs 125 After 15 Years Of Age, Deadline
Thereafter, a prescribed fee of Rs. 125 per MBU is charged. With this decision, MBU is now effectively free for all children between the ages of 5-17. The waiver has already kicked in as of October 2025 and remains in effect for one year.
How To Apply?
Parents can visit any authorised Aadhaar Enrolment Centre with their child’s Aadhaar number to update fingerprints, iris scans, and photographs. The full list of centres is available on the Bhuvan Aadhaar portal.
