The Narendra Modi government earned a significant amount of Rs 800 crore by retailing scrap accumulated over the years during a cleanliness drive last month. The amount earned massively exceeds the budget of Chandrayaan-3, which successfully landed on the Moon, as per a report by News18. This year’s figures have brought the government’s total earnings close to Rs 4,100 crore.
This year’s campaign was held between October 2 and 31. According to the report, the maximum office space freed amounted to 232 lakh sq ft, and the highest number of 29 lakh files were weeded out. This was one of the largest exercises in scale, covering nearly 11.58 lakh office sites.
The campaign was carried out under the leadership of the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DAR&PG). A total of 84 ministries coordinated with each other, including departments and missions abroad. Three senior ministers — Mansukh Mandaviya, Kiran Rijiju, and Dr. Jitendra Singh — oversaw its execution.
Between the years 2021 and 2025, the Centre has conducted five successful special campaigns that have helped institutionalize Swachhta and reduce pendency in government offices. The cumulative progress achieved through these five campaigns includes covering 23.62 lakh offices under the Swachhta campaign, freeing 928.84 lakh sq ft of space, weeding out nearly 166.95 lakh files, and earning Rs 4,097.42 crore from the sale of scrap.
This year, the campaign was reviewed by Cabinet Ministers and Ministers of State from various ministries. They held regular interactions with staff and conducted ministerial review meetings focused on reducing the pendency of public grievances. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently urged ministries to perform actively under the special campaign. With Inputs from IANS
