Zomato has released its year-end report for 2024, providing interesting insights into how Indians order food. This year too, biryani continued its undisputed reign as the most-ordered dish in India. Zomato delivered more than 9 crore biryani orders in 2024, which comes to more than three biryanis ordered every second during the year. A nation of biryani lovers, for sure.
As Zomato, the multinational restaurant aggregator, releases its 2024 year-end report, it’s no surprise that Biriyani once again claims the top spot as the most ordered dish for yet another consecutive year. In 2023 also, Biriyani topped the list as the most ordered food on Zomato in India, continuing its reign as a favorite among customers. This popular dish has consistently remained a top choice for food delivery across the country. In addition to Zomato, Swiggy’s 9th annual food trends report also highlighted India’s love for biryani, with 83 million orders in 2024- which can be averaged to 158 orders per minute or roughly 2 biryanis per second.
Zomato’s year-end report
Despite biryani holding its title as India’s most-ordered dish for the eighth year running, the data indicates subtle yet notable shifts in the nation’s dining preferences. According to various reports, Zomato recorded over 9.13 crore biryani orders in 2024, averaging an impressive three orders per second. However, this represents a decline from 2023’s staggering 10.09 crore orders – a drop of approximately 95 lakh orders year-over-year. Despite being a long-time favorite in Indian food culture, pizza didn’t perform as well this year. However, it still ranked second on the list of the most-ordered food items on Zomato. The number of pizza orders on Zomato dropped from 74.53 crore in 2023 to 58.45 crore in 2024, a significant decline of over 20 percent.

Zomato also shared some amusing stories. Another Breathtaking data came from Bengaluru- food lover spent an incredible sum of money on a single meal. The ‘anonymous’ foodie, according to Zomato, reportedly spent more than Rs 5 lakh at a single restaurant. Moreover, A Delhi-based foodie managed to explore 1377 unique restaurants this year. Zomato has partnered with the IRCTC to enable food delivery on trains when they stop at pre-decided stations on particular routes. The report revealed that using this feature, a person “Ordered 120 Manchurian combos to feed an entire train bogey!”
According to Business Standard report, Delhi residents collectively saved Rs 195 crore on their dining expenses, making the city the leader in dining reservations. Delhi’s thrifty dining culture was closely followed by Bengaluru and Mumbai, but they were unable to overtake it.
In 2024, Indians used Zomato to reserve more than 1 crore tables between January 1 and December 6, 2024–about 1,25,55,417 to be precise. On Father’s Day, 84,866 people took their fathers out to a pleasant lunch or dinner, making it one of the busiest days of the year.
‘How India Swiggy’d’
Swiggy’s Biryani triumph was released in the 9th edition of ‘How India Swiggy’d’. As per the report, Biryani marked its ninth consecutive year at the top. Following this, Dosa emerged as a culinary favorite, with 23 million orders. Meanwhile, in Shillong, Noodles took center stage as the most ordered dish in 2024. With 83 million biryani orders placed this year—equivalent to 158 orders per minute or roughly 2 biryanis every second—the report also highlighted an intriguing statistic: a single consumer in Bengaluru spent ₹49,900 on pasta, indulging in nearly 55 Alfredo dishes, 40 servings of Mac & Cheese, and 30 plates of Spaghetti.
