A day after Taiwanese electronics major Foxconn kicked off its manufacturing operations in Bengaluru to churn out iPhone 17s, Karnataka Minister for Commerce and Industries MB Patil said that in the coming days the city will propel India as the iPhone capital of the world.

It is yet another reaffirmation of the confidence investors have on Karnataka’s robust ecosystem, the minister said on Monday and added in a post on social media platform X, that the Taiwanese company had commenced its manufacturing operations at its new facility in Bengaluru, the second largest facility of the company outside of China.

Manufacturing operations from here enable Apple to expand its manufacturing capabilities, focusing on the latest model iPhone 17. Now, the Bengaluru factory will be adding to the output of then same model being manufactured at the Chennai facility of the company.

The expansion of capacity of Foxconn coincides with a significant increase in the Apple supplies in the country. In the first half of 2025, iPhone shipments grew by 21.5 percent annually, and iPhone 16 being its most shipped model. The company plans to increase its output to meet the growing demand, and Bengaluru plant operations are part of the company’s broader plan to step up iPhone production to 60 million units per year, up from 35-40 million units in 2024-25. 

Company CEO, im Cook noted that a majority of iPhones sold in the US in June 2025 had originated from India, highlighting the country’s growing role in Apple’s production ecosystem.
