Banks across India will remain closed for 15 days in September, including both national and state-specific holidays. Customers are advised to check the holiday list before visiting banks for financial transactions to avoid inconvenience. Apart from festivals and regional observances, banks will, as usual, will remain shut on all Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. Despite these closures, online banking services will function normally, ensuring uninterrupted digital transactions. Below are the list of holidays that banks will observe for September 2025- All as per the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) calendar.
Nationwide Bank Holidays
According to RBI, banks will remain shut on second and fourth Saturdays of the month, as well as Sundays. In-branch services will not be available for these days, but customers can carry out digital transactions.
Festival-Driven Closures
Beyond regular weekends, September will feature nine festival-related holidays. The dates vary by state. Major observances include:
- September 3 (Wednesday): Karma Puja in Jharkhand, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh
- September 4 (Thursday): First day of Onam in Kerala
- September 5 (Friday): Eid-e-Milad – observed in several states, including Kerala and Maharashtra
- September 6 (Saturday): Indrajatra in Sikkim and related observances in other regions

State/Union Territory-Wise Bank Holidays

- West Bengal, Assam, Odisha, Tripura: Bank holiday September 29-30 (Maha Saptami and Ashtami)
- Multiple States including Kerala, Maharashtra, UP: Onam and Eid-e-Milad bank holiday on September 5
While bank branches will remain closed on these holidays, digital services such as UPI, net banking, mobile apps, and ATMs will continue to function without interruption.
Onam Festival: Kerala will observe a bank holiday on Thursday, September 5, 2025, for the festival of Onam. As one of the state’s most important festivals, all banks across Kerala will remain closed on this day. Customers are advised to complete any important banking transactions in advance to avoid last-minute issues.
Id-E-Milad (Milad-un-Nabi)
Id-E-Milad, the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad, will be observed on Friday, September 5, 2025. On this day, banks will remain closed in several states, including Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Delhi. In some regions such as Jammu, Srinagar, Gangtok, and Raipur, the holiday may also fall on September 6 or 12, depending on local calendars.
