Bank holiday today, October 21: As the country witnesses continuous holidays due to Diwali, many people are confused about whether banks will remain open or closed on October 21. In some parts of the country, banks will observe a holiday on Tuesday due to Diwali Amavasya, Deepawali, and Govardhan Puja, as per the state-wise holiday calendar of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
Diwali on October 20 or 21?
Diwali, or Deepawali, is a major Hindu festival celebrating the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil, commemorating Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya after defeating King Ravana.
Traditionally, the date of Diwali is determined as per Amavasya Tithi. However, this time, the Amavasya Tithi falls over two days. The tithi starts on October 20 and continues through October 21, 2025. Most parts of the country celebrated Diwali on October 20. But some regions celebrate Diwali on October 21.
Govardhan Pooja 2025
Govardhana Pooja is celebrated on October 21. Some banks in India are closed for this festival. It is observed a day after Diwali. The festival honors Lord Krishna, who lifted the Govardhan hill to protect the people of Vrindavan from heavy rain and storms sent by Indra.
