New Delhi: A senior company official revealed that Adani Group company AdaniConneX plans to construct 1,000-megawatt data centres over the course of ten years, nearly doubling the current scale of the whole industry.

Sanjay Bhutani, Senior Vice President and Head of Data Center Business at AdaniConneX, announced that the company would build its first seven data centres in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Pune.

“We are building 1,000-megawatt data centres. Today, the industry stands at 550 MW. Building a 1,000-megawatt data centre in the next decade is our business plan,” Bhutani said while speaking at 9.9 Group’s CIO and Leader Conference on Saturday.

The amount of power that data centres use is used to gauge their capability. Arizton, a market research company, estimates that India’s data centre industry will reach 447 MW in 2021 and be worth USD 10.9 billion.

According to Bhutani, the first seven data centres will be located in six cities, with a combined capacity of 450 MW over the following three years, and 550 MW in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.

The only two places in India connected to this network are Mumbai and Chennai, he continued, adding that undersea cable is crucial for the data centre industry.

“We are unlocking that by bringing in a cable in the southern part of the country, the eastern part of the country and central part of the country,” Bhutani said.

Bhutani claimed that the government’s decision to provide data centres the status of digital infrastructure and the development of data centre policies by seven states had made it possible for the business to operate more effectively and quickly.

“Government also came out with a lot of policies which are actually helping the nation to grow at a faster pace, creating a common infrastructure, which can be used by all of us. Let’s not create data centres individually,” Bhutani said.

Even though India has 550 MW worth of data centres, according to him, a lot of data still leaves the nation. He pointed out that gathering data from other nations housed in India is necessary to turn India into a global digital hub.

In order to establish data centres in India, Adani Enterprises and the US company EdgeConneX launched a joint venture in February of last year.

The JV has previously announced plans to build data centres in Hyderabad, Chennai, Navi Mumbai, Noida, and Visakhapatnam.

The Uttar Pradesh government received an application from the Adani Group last year to invest Rs 2,500 crore in constructing a data centre in Sector 80 in Noida.
