8th pay commission: In a recent update on the 8th Pay Commission, the Central Government has issued an important clarification. It informed the Lok Sabha on Monday that the 8th Pay Commission has been formally constituted and its Terms of Reference (ToR) were notified on November 3, 2025. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary shared the details in a written reply.

Responding to a question on the implementation date, the government said the timeline will be decided later. This means the Commission’s work is underway, but the effective date for the revised pay is yet to be finalised.

What government stated
The government said that around 50.14 lakh central government employees and about 69 lakh pensioners will benefit from the 8th Pay Commission. In total, this means more than 10 million people will be covered by its recommendations.
It also clarified that budgetary provisions will be made only after the government accepts the Commission’s proposals. The Pay Commission will follow its own method and procedure while preparing these recommendations.
The government further noted that the Commission must submit its report within 18 months from the date of its formation, meaning the final recommendations will reach the government in about one and a half years.
Responding to concerns about delays in starting the Pay Commission process, the government said the Commission is already in place and will now work within its prescribed timeline.
