The formation of the 8th Central Pay Commission is a subject of intense debate and widespread speculation across the country. Recently, the Union Finance Ministry has clarified in the Rajya Sabha (upper house of the Indian Parliament) that it does not have any intention to set up a new Pay Commission for now. This statement came as a shocker for over 1 crore government employees and pensioners.
Notably, the central government implemented the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission’s in 2016. Likewise, this Pay Commission raised the minimum monthly salary for central government employees from Rs 7,000 to Rs 18,000. Moreover, the central government employees were considering the traditional benchmark of 10 years for implementing the recommendation of the new Pay Commission. Furthermore, they were hoping that the central government will implement the recommendations of 8th Pay Commission from January 2026. This will lead to the 186% salary hike for central government employees.
8th Pay Commission: Why 186% Pay Hike?
Shiv Gopal Mishra, secretary of the staff side of the National Council of Joint Consultative Machinery (NC-JCM), had recently said that the next Pay Commission may suggest a fitment factor of 2.86 or more. If the central government approves the proposed fitment factor would result in the minimum basic pay from Rs 18,000 to Rs 51,480, a 186% salary hike.
Furthermore, at the same fitment factor, the minimum pension of the central government pensioners may also rise to Rs 25,740 from Rs 9,000.
