The new Pay Commission is expected to commence its work in April 2025, as part of the financial year 2025-26, several media reports quoted Expenditure Secretary Manoj Govil.

The union cabinet, in January, gave its nod to the 8th Pay Commission. The topic was a subject of a widespread speculation from a long time in the country. The central government traditionally forms a Pay Commission every 10 years. 7th Pay Commission was set up in 2014 and the government implemented it from 2016.

8th Pay Commission: 100-186% Pay Hike

Staff side leader of the National Council-Joint Consultative Machinery (NC-JCM), M. Raghavaiah, recently told NDTV Profit that they are pushing for a fitment factor of 2 under the 8th Pay Commission.

Moreover, Subhash Chandra Garg, former finance secretary of India, told News24 that the government may approve the fitment factor of 1.92-2.08.

However, secretary staff side of NCJCM, Shiv Gopal Mishra, told to News24 that the new fitment factor should not be less than 2.86.

Considering these fitment factors, the pay revisions could range between 92-186%

Currently, the minimum basic salary for central government employees is 18,000 and minimum basic pension for pensioners is 9,000 under the 7th Pay Commission.

Timeline

The new Pay Commission is expected to commence its work in April 2025, as part of the financial year 2025-26, several media reports quoted Expenditure Secretary Manoj Govil.

However, Shiv Gopal Mishra in a recent interview with News24, said, “I’m hopeful that the 8th Pay Commission will be established by February 15th, 2025. The Commission’s report will be finalized by November 30th, and the government will review it in December for further consideration, and the new Pay Commission can be implemented from January 2026 in the country.”
