New Delhi: According to Union Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the government received bids totaling over Rs 1.5 lakh crore during the 5G spectrum auction, which ended on August 1.

According to Vaishnaw, the auction, which was performed over the course of 40 rounds of bidding over the previous seven days, saw the sale of 51,236 MHz, or around 71 percent, of the total 72,098 MHz of spectrum that was up for grabs.
The minister stated that the government has received a “total bid value of Rs 1,50,173 crore.”

According to Vaishnaw, the spectrum allocation will be finished by August 10 and that there is “enough spectrum purchased to cover the entire country with 5G.”
He added that the 5G spectrum auction’s success is also “a strong indicator” for the nation’s telecom industry.

With bids above Rs 88,000 crore, Reliance Jio, the telecom division of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), is the largest purchaser of 5G spectrum.

According to Vaishnaw, Jio is the only bidder to have obtained 700 MHz across all 22 circles.
The range of 700 MHz, which provides the telecom operator with a strong base coverage, is between 5 and 10 kilometres.
Jio has collectively purchased 24,740MHz (700, 800, 1800, 3300, and 26GHz) of the spectrum that was put up for auction for a total of Rs 88,078 crore.

Bharti Airtel won 19,867 MHz (700, 800, 1800, 3300, and 26GHz) from the other three bids for a total sum of Rs 43,084 crore.
In terms of market share, Vodafone Idea—the third-largest telecom player behind Jio and Airtel—acquired spectrum for Rs 18,799 crore.
The newest player in the market, Adani Data Networks, a division of the Adani Group, purchased 400 MHz for a payable sum of Rs 212 crore.
By acquiring the right to use spectrum in the 700MHz, 800MHz, 1800MHz, 3300MHz, and 26GHz bands, Jio, which took first place in the bidding, has solidified its position as the market leader in all 22 circles.

“Jio is fully ready for 5G rollout in the shortest period of time because of its nationwide fibre presence, all-IP network with no legacy infrastructure, indigenous 5G stack and strong global partnerships across the technology ecosystem,” the company said in a statement.

Jio’s unique 700 MHz spectrum footprint will make it the only operator providing 5G services across India. “We will celebrate ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ with a pan India 5G rollout. Jio is committed to offering world-class, affordable 5G and 5G-enabled services,” Akash Ambani, chairman of the telecom giant, said.

Gopal Vittal, the MD & CEO of Bharti Airtel, which emerged as the second highest bidder, said they adopted a “deliberate strategy to buy the best spectrum assets at a substantially lower relative cost compared to our competition”.

“We are confident that we will be able to deliver the best 5G experience in India in terms of coverage, speeds and latency. This will allow us to change a lot of established paradigms for both our B2C and B2B customers. 5G technology is the revolution that can alter India’s manufacturing, services and several other sectors,” Vittal added.
