Why Doesn’t The Toyota Fortuner Have A Sunroof? Know The Reasons

Toyota Fortuner, priced at Rs 60 lakh, lacks a sunroof due to its premium SUV status and concerns about practicality in its 7-seater layout, as well as issues related to Indian climate and maintenance challenges associated with sunroof seals.

Cars have changed drastically in recent times; companies have been trying to improve the cabin experience. Amidst all this popularity, a sunroof has become a standard or an optional feature even in cars above Rs 10 lakh price tag, especially in new models. So, why hasn’t the Rs 60 lakh Toyota Fortuner got a sunroof?

The inclusion of a sunroof bumps up the price of the car. The Fortuner, in itself, is already a premium SUV, and maybe Toyota does not want to make it pricier.

Challenges in 7-Seater Layout

The Fortuner also comes in a 7-seater layout, and a sunroof in this configuration doesn’t seem very practical. It may cause passengers in the third row to bump their heads against the roof.

Climate Conditions

As per Toyota, this sunroof does not suit Indian climatic conditions. The problem is the high temperatures in India—going as high as 40 degrees Celsius—that make a sunroof ineffective in these conditions. Sunroofs also add to the load of the AC system. Furthermore, some Toyotas like the Innova and Fortuner come equipped with roof-mounted AC units which might have compatibility problems with a sunroof.

For an Indian market buyer, the presence of a sunroof is not that important in SUVs. So, maybe Toyota has focused on other features more significant for Indian customers, like infotainment systems or compartment addition.

Simplicity and Safety

Toyota cars are associated with simplicity and reliability. Reliability is, in fact an important factor in Toyotas. That is why Toyotas do not have sunroofs. Sunroofs have rubber seals. These seals require periodic maintenance. If the seals are not properly maintained, then water may enter the car. There is also a safety concern with having sunroofs. Children leaning out of sunroofs can be hazardous. These are some problems that Toyota would like to keep out of its cars.

Future Plan

There might also be less demand for a sunroof in the Fortuner. If Toyota finds out that most customers want a sunroof, they could consider including it in the future.
