To ease the import of globally popular vehicles to the auto market the Indian government has allowed manufacturers to import foreign manufactured vehicles in India irrespective of any price or engine capacity or restrictions of mandatory local testing. However import duties on the vehicles would remain the same.
As of yet the Directorate General of Foreign Trade – permits homologation free- without testing import of four wheelers worth us $40,000 or above to India. But under the proposed norms a company is allowed to import up to 2500 units of Completely Built Units (CBU’s) or SKD’S(Semi Knocked Down) kits of cars or two wheelers annually.
Volkswagen Polo GTI Imports
So as per the information by DGFT its possible that Volkswagen might bring in about 2500 units or maybe lower. the brand can follow the same process as they did before when they launched the Polo Gti in India. The brand only brought an alleged 99 cars but the enthusiasts on forums have long discussed as to how there were more vehicles in The market than the alleged 99. All the vehicles were three door versions and are quite hard to find in India.
