New Delhi: Toyota Kirloskar Motor launched its mid-size SUV Urban Cruiser Hybrid in September 2022. It offers a choice between a 1.5-liter TNJ-E Atkinson cycle strong hybrid powertrain and a 1.5-liter K15 mild hybrid powertrain. The strong hybrid version comes with only an eCVT, while the mild hybrid version offers a choice between a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic. The mild hybrid manual version also comes with an optional AWD system. Since its launch, this car has performed exceptionally well in terms of sales. The demand for its strong hybrid variants S, G, and V is very high. If you want to purchase the hybrid version of this model, you will have to wait for approximately 78 weeks, which is about 1 year and 5 months. The waiting period for the mild hybrid version is given as 35 weeks.
The company’s statement is that “Hybrid technology is an important direction for the company. It will play a crucial role in Toyota’s future and success in India. The company utilizes this technology in the Hyrider and Harrier models. Currently, the Japanese automaker is a leader in the strong hybrid car market in the country. In the first quarter of 2023, the company sold 22,389 strong hybrid vehicles with an 83% market share. The company plans to expand its hybrid model lineup in the future with three new models, including a coupe SUV based on the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, a 7-seater SUV based on the Corolla Cross, and the new generation Fortuner SUV.”
What will the new SUV be like?
There is a possibility of receiving some cosmetic changes inspired by the European-spec Yaris Cross in Toyota’s Maruti-based compact crossover. This car will also offer a choice between a 1.2-liter petrol engine and a 1.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine, with the option of using mild hybrid technology. As for the 7-seater Innova Crysta, the powertrain from the Innova Crysta Cross will be used for the Toyota Corolla Cross. It will offer a choice between a 2.0-liter NA petrol engine and a 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle engine.
How does it compare?
The Toyota Harrier competes with the Hyundai Creta, which offers a choice between a petrol and a diesel engine. The facelift version of the Harrier will be launched in the market soon.
