New Delhi: On the occasion of World EV Day 2022, Tata Motors today announced the next addition to its range of electric vehicles – the Tiago EV, which will go on sale in the coming months. Unveiled as a concept first at an event in the UK and later in India at the 2018 Auto Expo, the Tiago EV will sit below the Tigor EV in the brand’s electrified lineup.
Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director, Passenger Cars, Tata Motors, said: “As we accelerate our future journey, we are committed to launching 10 electric vehicles across different product segments, body styles and affordability levels.”
Tata Tiago EV: Expected Powertrain Options
While the official specification details of the new Tata Tiago EV are not yet known, we expect it to share its EV platform and powertrain with the Tigor EV, which is already on sale. Tata Motors has not one but three options already available on the Tigor EV and Tigor X-Press T EV for fleet operators.
Starting the progression could be the base engine with 41 horsepower and 105 Nm of torque. This motor is available with two battery pack options: a 16.5 kWh version that can handle 100 miles of range, and a 21.5 kWh iteration that is good for a range of 130 miles on the X-Press T EV.
The third and more powerful version, available only for the Tigor EV for private customers, is the Ziptron architecture with a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor producing 75 hp and 170 Nm. It comes with a 26kWh lithium-ion battery; allows fast charging and a range of 306 km.
Interestingly, the Tigor EV has a split battery, with one part of the battery located in the trunk. It remains to be seen how Tata Motors will package this setup for the Tiago EV.
With affordable pricing, the Tiago EV can be a game changer not only for Tata Motors but also for the mass EV segment in India. Expect more details on the Tiago EV to be announced in the coming months.
