Which Electric Car Can Emerge As The Game-Changer? With the growing demand for electric cars in India, manufacturers are stepping up their game by introducing new models and updating the existing ones for 2024. Several automakers have lined up their electric offerings for this year to capitalise on the rising demand. Homegrown auto major Tata Motors is reigning supreme in the segment with almost 70% market share.
The automaker recently updated its most affordable offering, the Tiago EV, for model year 2024. However, the update is minor and enhances the existing appeal of the Tata Tiago EV. This update introduced a few enhancements including a new 2D logo, auto-dimming IRVM, USB Type C charging port, and a gear selector knob.
Moving on, the Tiago EV will compete against the Hyundai Exter EV, the brand’s first electric SUV slated for a launch this year in India. With several options available in the market, which of the two EVs will carve a niche in the Indian EV market, and how do they stack up against each other? let’s find out!
Tata Tiago EV vs Hyundai Exter EV
Design and Aesthetics: Hatch Vs SUV
The Exter will have an SUV silhouette, while the Tiago EV carries a hatchback design. While the Tiago offers practicality, the Exter will boast a premium look and feel.
Performance Showdown
The Tiago EV is powered by a permanent magnet synchronous motor churning out 74 bhp and 170 Nm. With a lithium-ion battery, it offers a certified ARAI range of 250 km on a single charge. A DC fast charger tops the hatchback from 0-80% in just 60 minutes.

An electric version of the conventional Exter, the Hyundai Exter EV will likely boast a powerful electric motor that could deliver over 130 bhp and 350 Nm. It will pack a larger lithium-ion battery that could offer a driving range of more than 450 km on a single charge. It is expected to come with a fast charging capability of 10-80% in 30 minutes.
Feature Face-Off
As for features, the Tiago EV gets a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, connected car technology, ABS with EBD as standard, dual airbags, and more.
Exeter EV is expected to include features like a Bose premium sound system, wireless charging, LED headlamps, BlueLink-connected vehicle technology, a 360-degree camera, and an electric sunroof.
Unveiling the Price Points
The price of the Tata Tiago EV starts at Rs 7.99 lakh (ex-showroom), making it an affordable offering in the electric car segment. The Exter is expected to get a higher price tag. Therefore, being an affordable family electric car, the Tiago presents a stronger value proposition, especially for budget-conscious buyers.
Buy Tiago EV Now or Wait for the Exter EV?
Both the Tiago and Exter EVs are a good choice for prospective buyers in India. However, Tata Motors has taken an initial advantage by launching the Tiago EV first at affordable prices, capturing the EV market early and driving sales volumes up. However, those who prefer SUVs might be eagerly waiting for the Exter EV.
Should you buy the Tiago EV or wait for the Exter EV? Well, this choice should come down to your preferences and requirements. If you want a car for daily commutes in city traffic, then the Tiago EV will be a good choice. For those seeking a car for both long-distance journeys and daily commutes, then the Exter EV will serve the purpose.
