New Delhi: The adoption of EVs in the automotive industry is an electrifying topic, but this revolution has been somewhat crippled in the ATV segment due to a severe lack of available EVs. Where other manufacturers have failed, Tata Motors has tasted unprecedented success with the Tigor EV, Nexon EV and now the Tiago EV is expected to take up the baton.
With emission norms making internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles more expensive every year, Tata Motors is betting big on electric vehicles and trying to cut costs. The Tiago EV 2022 is undoubtedly the most affordable sub-Rs 10,000 electric car in India, but we check to see if there’s more to it than being easy on the pocket.
Tata Tiago EV Review: What is it?
The biggest change is undoubtedly what’s under the hood. Available in both petrol and CNG, Tata Motors has decided to accelerate with the introduction of the Tiago EV. With the electric variant, the new EV hatchback is available in two battery variants – 19.2 kWh and 24 kWh. The battery and motor are IP67 rated for waterproof and dustproof and come with a warranty of 8 years or 1.6 lakh kilometers.
The basic variants will be powered by a smaller battery that has a power of 60 hp and a torque of 110 Nm. According to MIDC (Modified Indian Driving Cycle), it offers a range of 250 km and according to Tata Motors, the mid trim Tiago EV accelerates from 0-60 km/h in 6.2 seconds. On the other hand, the more powerful Tiago EV churns out 74 hp and 114 Nm and accelerates from 0 to 60 km/h in 5.7 seconds. Based on the MIDC report, the EV hatchback has a range of 315 km.

Range anxiety is the biggest challenge for the EV customer, and to solve this problem, the Tiago EV offers several charging options, including a common household 15A connector. Both the regular household plug and the wall box need a charge time from 10% to 100% in 6.9 hours for 19.2kWh and 8.7 hours for 24kwh. The 7.2 kW AC charger charges smaller and larger batteries in 2.6 hours and 3.6 hours, respectively. The DC fast charger charges both batteries from 10% to 100% in 58 minutes.
Tata Tiago EV Review: Driving Experience and Ride Quality
We drove the 24kWh variant of the Tiago EV and you immediately notice that the electric car picks up a linear pace. Unlike other electric vehicles that have an unadulterated sharp power response that can catch ICE owners off guard, the Tiago EV offers a natural transition that ensures the person behind the wheel shines with confidence. It is available in two driving modes — City and Sport.
The Tata EV on City mode has more than enough juice for highway overtaking, hill climbs without huffing and puffing, and of course it cruises comfortably in the triple digits, apart from having to deal with daily commuting needs. Sport, on the other hand, gives the Tiago EV a chance. The electric hatchback shows real guts as it soars from the start. As engaging and fun as it is to drive in Sport mode, we noticed that the Tiago EV’s range starts to drop by about 10 km compared to City mode.
The Tiago EV also comes with three levels of regenerative braking. The first level is the mildest and offers almost no stopping power, but the second mode is ideal for everyday city driving and automatically applies the brakes when necessary. The third is the most effective and is more like an additional safety feature, especially for new drivers.
With the spicy power comes Tiago EV’s USP strength and its exceptional ride quality. Tata vehicles are known for providing magic carpet ride comfort and the Tiago EV is no different. In fact, the hatch remains undisturbed on broken roads full of potholes. It is safe to say that the Tiago EV offers the best driving characteristics in its segment. In addition to offering luxurious driving characteristics that rear seat passengers will appreciate, the Tiago EV also excels in handling. When cornering, it doesn’t veer off course because the chassis remains riveted to the asphalt. The steering wheel is on the lighter side, making it easier to weave through slow-moving traffic.

Tata Tiago EV Review: Features
The Tiago EV is the first in its class to offer connected technology with 45 functions via the ZConnect app. According to Tata Motors, this is not just a convenience feature like turning on the air conditioner before entering the cabin, but rather with analytics, it tells the customer how to get the most out of the Tiago EV in terms of range and efficiency. This technology allows the EV owner to know what the vehicle is capable of and get used to it.
The Tata Tiago EV comes with fully automatic climate control as standard and offers steering wheel controls including cruise control, cooled glove box, rear wiper with defogger, rain sensing wipers and automatic headlights. The EV also has a 7-inch infotainment display that is paired with Android Auto and Apple Carplay along with an 8-speaker Haman music system.
Tata Tiago EV Review: Price and Verdict
The price of the Tiago EV is revolutionary as it starts at Rs 8.49 lakh, while the long-range trim starts at Rs 10.79 lakh and goes up to Rs 11.79 lakh, ex-showroom. Currently, there is no other electric car available under Rs 10 lakh. Let’s also not forget that it is based on the 4-star Global NCAP-rated Tiago platform, making it one of the safest hatchbacks in the country.

Tata Tiago EV Instructions:
The Tiago EV ticks all the boxes for city commuters who need a spacious and efficient vehicle with zero maintenance requirements. It is packed with features and pampers passengers with its premium ride quality. In real-world driving conditions, the long-range Tiago EV should offer a range of around 220-240 km, which is enough for daily commutes from home to office and back. Deliveries of the EV hatchback will begin from January 2023 and Tata Motors can be expected to raise its price as it is available at introductory prices.
