Tata Motors has developed an all-new 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine that will soon make its debut in the Tata Sierra. The 1.5-litre direct injection turbo-petrol engine was showcased at the Auto Expo 2023 earlier and will soon be shoehorned into the trunk of the upcoming Sierra. It’s possible that Tata might introduce a simpler naturally aspirated (NA) version to ensure the vehicle is available at a more affordable price in the base trims.
Sierra 1.5 NA Engine
A version of Tata’s 1.5-litre direct injection turbo-petrol engine will share its basic architecture – including bore spacing, block, and head design – but will ditch the turbocharger and high-pressure injection system in favour of a port fuel injection setup.
Such an offering will help Tata price the entry-level variants aggressively and appeal to customers who are more inclined towards lower ownership costs over outright performance.
New 1.5-Litre NA Engine Specs
The NA engine is expected to produce around 120 hp and 140 Nm of peak torque. Tata engineers are targeting low NVH levels and best-in-class efficiency, with E20 fuel compatibility right from the start.
New 1.5-Litre Turbo-Petrol Engine Specs
The 1.5-litre direct injection turbo-petrol engine, meanwhile, will power the higher variants of the Sierra, as well as the Harrier and Safari. It is expected to deliver around 170 hp and 280 Nm of torque. Featuring variable geometry turbocharging, direct injection, and advanced knock control, it is being positioned as Tata’s flagship petrol powertrain.
Competition
The new Tata Sierra will compete against the likes of the Mahindra Thar, Scorpio N, and the all-new XUV700.
