Tata Motors’ recently launched SUV, the Tata Sierra, has created history by becoming India’s most fuel-efficient petrol-powered car. The SUV achieved an impressive 29.9 kmpl mileage during an official test conducted on November 30 at the NATRAX test track in Indore, setting a new national benchmark in fuel efficiency.
The record-breaking figure surpasses the previous mileage record of 29.8 kmpl, which was held by the Volkswagen Taigun. Tata Motors has confirmed that the achievement has been officially entered into the India Book of Records.
Record-Breaking Test at Indore NATRAX
The test was carried out on the closed NATRAX high-speed track, ensuring controlled conditions without traffic, road interruptions, or signal halts. Professional drivers from the Pixel Motion team drove the Tata Sierra continuously for 12 hours, from 7 am to 7 pm, with brief pauses only for driver changes.
To achieve optimal efficiency, the vehicle was driven at an average speed of 65–70 kmph, allowing the engine to operate within its most efficient RPM range. Over the course of the test, the SUV covered nearly 800 kilometres, a key factor in validating the consistency of its fuel efficiency.
Hyperion Turbo-Petrol Engine Delivers Performance
The tested model was powered by Tata’s newly developed 1.5-litre, four-cylinder TGDi Hyperion turbo-petrol engine. This advanced powertrain produces 160PS of power and 255Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
According to Tata Motors, the engine features an advanced combustion system, low-friction internal components, and a broad torque band, all of which help maintain fuel stability over long distances. These engineering upgrades played a crucial role in achieving the record mileage figure.
Top Speed Achievement and Safety Measures
Apart from fuel efficiency, the Tata Sierra also demonstrated strong performance credentials. During the test run, the SUV achieved a top speed of 222 kmph. However, Tata Motors has clarified that for customer safety, the production version of the vehicle will have its top speed electronically limited to 190 kmph.
Mileage Figures Under Controlled Conditions
Tata Motors emphasized that the record mileage was achieved under controlled testing conditions. The company noted that real-world mileage may vary depending on driving style, road conditions, traffic, and weather.
Tata Sierra Pricing Details
The new Tata Sierra has been launched in the Indian market with an introductory ex-showroom price starting at Rs 11.49 lakh, while higher variants are priced up to around Rs 18.49 lakh, depending on the engine and feature configuration.
Other Engine Options on Offer
In addition to the Hyperion turbo-petrol engine, the Tata Sierra is available with two more powertrain options. These include a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine delivering 106PS, and a 1.5-litre diesel engine, offering buyers multiple choices based on performance and efficiency preferences.
A New Benchmark for Petrol SUVs
With this achievement, Tata Sierra has not only reclaimed the spotlight in India’s SUV segment but has also set a new benchmark for petrol vehicle fuel efficiency. The record underscores Tata Motors’ focus on innovation, performance, and efficiency, positioning the Sierra as a strong contender in the competitive Indian automobile market.
