Tata Motors experienced a significant increase in CNG vehicle sales in FY2024, with approximately 91,000 units sold, marking a 120% rise compared to FY2023’s sales of around 41,000 units. This information was shared during Tata’s Investor Day 2024. The company introduced its first CNG models, the Tiago and Tigor, in late FY2022.

In FY2023, Tata launched the Altroz and Punch iCNG models, both incorporating Tata’s new twin-cylinder technology, which uses two smaller CNG cylinders under a raised boot floor instead of a single large cylinder. The Tiago and Tigor iCNG were also updated with the twin-cylinder technology, and AMT variants of these small cars were introduced in Q4 FY2024, a market first.
Tata Witness Rise In CNG Vehicle Sales
In FY2024, Tata’s CNG vehicle sales surpassed its EV sales, with the latter reaching around 74,000 units. This represented a 48% year-on-year increase from the 50,000 units sold in the previous financial year. Notable EV launches in FY2024 included the upgraded Nexon EV and the Punch EV on Tata’s new dedicated EV platform. The Tiago EV emerged as the best-selling all-electric model for Tata, outperforming the larger Nexon EV.
Overall, CNG and EV sales accounted for about 29% of Tata’s total sales of over 573,000 units in FY2024, up from 17% in the previous year. The contribution of EVs to total sales grew from 9% in FY2023 to 13% in FY2024, while the share of CNG vehicles doubled from 8% to 16%. Conversely, the share of petrol and diesel vehicles dropped from 83% in FY2023 to 71% in FY2024.
Tata Motors plans to focus more on its alternative powertrain strategy in the coming years, with several new launches on the horizon. The Nexon iCNG is set to join Tata’s CNG lineup this year, while the EV range will expand with the addition of the much-anticipated Curvv and Harrier EVs in FY2025. This will be followed by the Sierra EV and the first model in the Avinya series of premium EVs in FY2026.
