New Delhi: Indian EV startup Ola Electric chose the occasion of Diwali to release another teaser video for its upcoming electric car. Unlike previous teasers that showed various exterior design options, this time the teaser gives us a brief look at the interior.
Ola Electric car get digital dials, touch controls
Although the interior of the Ola Electric is heavily obscured by shadows, some details can be discerned. The first thing shown inside the car is the steering wheel, which reveals a two-spoke design with an octagonal central boss embossed with the Ola logo. The spokes have what appear to be backlit touch controls on either side, as well as a pair of switches. However, the most interesting part is that the ‘steering wheel’ itself appears to be almost rectangular in shape.
Cool blue ambient interior lighting can be seen behind the steering wheel, and a little further back is a free-standing digital instrument panel that displays a digital speedometer. A wider shot of the entire dashboard reveals more of the clean, minimalist design.
At the very top is a thin strip of ambient lighting, and just in front of that could be a slim row of AC vents. There is also a better view of the steering wheel, but also of the massive, landscape-oriented touchscreen with a floating design in the middle. There are no other controls or switches visible on the dashboard, which could indicate that all the controls are integrated into the touchscreen itself.
The exterior of the Ola Electric reveals a new crossover design
The latest look at the vehicle shows a front-on view and reveals another view from what we showed earlier, suggesting that the design has not yet been finalized.
It appears to be a high performance vehicle with a relatively upright windshield, suggesting that it is a crossover. Visual references to previous teasers include a minimalist, rounded shape, a smoothed “air intake” low in the front bumper and a horizontal LED light bar across the nose with the Ola logo in the middle. The headlight signature is new, which appears to be a pair of stacked horizontal blocks. There’s even some sculpting on the hood, as well as cameras instead of exterior mirrors.
It’s unclear at this stage whether there will be one or more body styles, with the brand showing various, varying details through a series of online teasers, the latest of which showed a sedan-like model. The car is due to arrive in 2024 and technical details are limited for now.
However, we know that Ola is not targeting the budget segment and instead is going premium with its first electric car with a starting price likely above Rs 25 lakh. It is also likely to use a 70-80kWh battery with an intended range of over 500km, 0-100km/h under 5 seconds and a drag coefficient of just 0.21; however, the latter will likely be for the sedan model.
This teaser comes right on the back of yesterday’s launch of the Ola S1 Air, the brand’s entry-level electric scooter, whose lower price tag of Rs 79,999 should help those on the fence to jump on the EV bandwagon. The model features not only changes such as fewer driving modes, but also different supports and lower weight.
In addition, the brand has declared its intention to explore the more expensive electric motorcycle space as well, all of which adds to the idea that more quad models will be possible. However, the EV space is filling up fast – with established entrants like the Tata Nexon EV Max, Hyundai Kona Electric and MG ZS EV soon to be joined by the Mahindra XUV400 and BYD Atto 3 – so Ola’s first four-wheeler offering will have its work cut out for it.
