In a recent report the Government of India has relaxed its vintage classic car import policy. Previously only cars that were built before 1950 could be imported. As of now under the new relaxed norms cars 50 years or older are eligible for a license free import. Hence now the permitted import period has been increased from pre 1950 to 1975. The extension has been that of another 25 years in the overall range of the years.
The Exact date to determine the age of the vehicle would be to calculate from the date of registration after its initial sales. Now enthusiasts would be able to easily import cars from Mercedes, Jaguar, Porsche and some resolute examples of American muscle cars.
Is The Import Of Classic Cars Now Free
The import of the vehicles would not be free, a few fees would be levied on the overall import of the vehicles. The Import has gotten License free which implies that the users would not need to have import license as the buyers would be able to bring in these cars after paying the stated dues and fees. The charges would involve customs duty, GST and registration all together work out to about 250 % of the invoice the traded value of the car.
What Are The Restrictions On The Usage of These Cars
The users would not be allowed to resale any of these imported vintage cars in the Indian Domestic Market. The stipulation further establishes that the imported cars should be for personal use and should not be sold ahead after the initial sales in India.
A five year no sale rule can be introduced in future. Beyond that the cars intended for the use on public roads must comply with the Motor Vehicles Act , 1988, and the Central Motor Vehicles Act 1988.
