New Maruti suzuki Swift Vs Rivals: fuel efficiency compared
Maruti Suzuki has launched the all-new Swift in India with prices starting from Rs 6.49 lakh and going up to Rs 9.50 lakh (ex-showroom). One of the highlights of the fourth-generation Swift is its all-new engine – the Z Series, three-cylinder petrol engine offering a claimed fuel economy of 24.80kmpl on manual and 25.75kmpl on automatic. Here’s how the 2024 Maruti Suzuki Swift stacks up against its rivals in terms of fuel efficiency:
Maruti Suzuki Swift Vs Similarly Priced Rivals
- New Maruti Suzuki Swift: Petrol-MT – 24.80kmpl; Petrol-AT – 25.75mpl
- Old Swift: Petrol-MT – 22.38kmpl; Petrol-AT – 22.56kmpl
- Hyundai Grand i10 Nios: Petrol-MT – 20.7kmpl; Petrol-MT – 20.1kmpl
- Citroen C3: Petrol-MT – 19.8kmpl; Petrol-MT – N/A
- Tata Tiago: Petrol-MT – 20.09kmpl; Petrol-MT – 20.09kmpl
- Maruti Suzuki Ignis: Petrol-MT – 20.89kmpl; Petrol-MT – 20.89kmpl
- Hyundai exter: Petrol-MT – 19.4kmpl; Petrol-MT – 19.2kmpl
- Tata Punch: Petrol-MT – 18.97kmpl; Petrol-MT – 18.82kmpl
The new Swift is 2.42kmpl more efficient than the old model in manual, while it offers 3.19kmpl of more mileage in automatic. As compared to its direct rivals like Grand i10 Nios, Tata Tiago, and Citroen C3 and similarly priced sub-compact SUVs like the Hyundai Exter, Tata Punch, and Maruti Ignis, the Swift is the most efficient. Among these, the Tata Punch is the least efficient.
However, the latest engine used in the Swift delivers 8hp and 1Nm less than the old four-cylinder K-Series unit. But what works for the new motor in terms of mileage is the improved volumetric efficiency, i.e. each cylinder now has a capacity of 400cc. It makes the new hatchback more suitable for city use.

Maruti Swift Vs Premium Hatchbacks
- Maruti Swift: Petrol-MT – 24.80kmpl ; Petrol-AT – 25.75kmpl
- Maruti Baleno: Petrol-MT – 22.35kmpl ; Petrol-AT – 22.94kmpl
- Toyota Glanza: Petrol-MT – 22.35kmpl ; Petrol-AT – 22.94kmpl
- Hyundai i20: Petrol-MT – 20.35kmpl ; Petrol-AT – 19.65kmpl
- Tata Altroz: Petrol-MT – 18.50kmpl ; Petrol-AT – 19.33kmpl
Baleno and Altroz have been included in the comparison because the new Swift’s prices fall within the same range as many premium hatchbacks.
As compared to the rivals mentioned above, Swift is the most fuel-efficient in this comparison too by a fair margin, followed by Baleno and its rebadged model Glanza. The least fuel-efficient in this lot is the Tata Altroz.
Notably, what makes all these hatches less fuel-efficient is their large size and heavy build. Moreover, the i20 comes with CVT and the Altroz has DCT, which are not as fuel-efficient as the AMTs.
