New Delhi: Mercedes-Benz has already announced that it will bring the all-electric EQB to India, but has not disclosed that the regular GLB is also headed here. The seven-seat GLB is likely to go on sale in early December and will be imported from Mexico and sold as a fully equipped unit.

Mercedes-Benz GLB: No local assembly means it will be expensive

While Mercy’s other front-wheel drive vehicles, such as the A-Sedan and GLA, are assembled here, the GLB – which had its world premiere in 2019 – will be imported only. Therefore, it will be significantly more expensive. Prices are expected to be in the range of Rs 65-70 crore. That’s quite a step up from the Rs 45-49-49 lakh asked for the GLA or the Rs 42-44 lakh asking price of the A sedan.

It’s not that Mercedes India doesn’t want to make the car here; That would be nice. The GLB would be a great addition to the lineup, bridging the gap to the GLC nicely, and if market forces wanted it, it could even become the best-selling car/SUV in the Mercedes portfolio, taking over the GLC. However, CKD kits for the GLB are not available with right-hand drive, and no kits from Mexico mean no fitment.

Mercedes-Benz GLB: 7-seat advantage

The GLB’s trump card is, of course, the fact that it is a 7-seater car. This is something Mercedes SUV owners have been asking for. Many Mercedes SUV owners want to travel with their extended families, and the GLB will give them that opportunity. The GLB also gets a little boost from being the only other seven-seater Mercedes besides the GLS.

Also helping the GLB’s case is the fact that it’s significantly larger than the GLA. In fact, it’s so big it’s close to the size of the current GLC – even bigger when you look at some critical dimensions. The 4,744mm length is seriously impressive and it sits on a 2,892mm wheelbase, so the GLB is actually bigger than the GLC inside. And bigger is better.

Mercedes-Benz GLB: Looks like GLS

Another advantage of the GLB is that it looks like a small GLS. Stand-up lines will certainly be appreciated by Indian SUV buyers. The upright grille and headlights set the tone, it has a long, flat hood and roofline, the angular wheel arches and ‘D’ pillar are similar to the GLS, and at the back it even looks very familiar thanks to the segmented taillights. .

It’s not all me-too; The GLB has a distinctive feature, an interesting break in the shoulder line. Its task is to raise the shoulder line towards the rear without making the SUV look forward.

Mercedes GLB: Classy Interior

The GLB’s interior borrows heavily from its SUV sister, the GLA. The sloping dashboard, door panels and seats all look similar to the GLA, and various individual elements on the dashboard are also taken from the MFA parts bin.

The long one-piece touchscreen and instrument panel, the “deconstructed dashboard” with a twist to close the air vents, the climate controls and the trackpad on the center console are familiar. Leather, chrome and knurled buttons blend beautifully in the high-quality steering wheel. And what also carries over to the GLB is the solid construction.

Expect kinetic front seats, multi-colored mood lighting, “Hey Mercedes” voice commands and a panoramic sunroof. Second row space and comfort should be good, and you can slide the second row back. However, the third row is cramped in place. Autocar India staff who have sat in the car say that the space is only adequate, even after adjusting the seats in the first and second rows. This means that the third row, although practical, will ideally only be used for short stretches.

Mercedes-Benz GLB: practicality and performance
What’s nice, though, is that even with three rows up, there’s a decent-sized boot to stash some soft luggage. Space with all three rows up is 130-150 litres, depending on how high you load it.

Mercedes is likely to limit the engine choices to the 190hp 220d and 163hp 200 petrol. With its 400Nm of torque, the 220d is probably the better choice. Unless Mercedes decides to import the 224bhp petrol, which would be kind of ideal. Some versions will get 4X4 or 4Matic and this will also be an important addition.
