To support India’s push for electric vehicles, the Supreme Court has suggested that the government should consider banning ICE vehicles. If the ban is executed, it will be done in a phased manner to ensure that it does not hamper people’s everyday needs. Since high-end cars are owned by a smaller section of society, the government is considering starting with this segment.
Ban on Luxury Cars — Why?
As per a report by Motor Octane, the ban will include not only diesel-powered vehicles but petrol-powered vehicles as well. Along with this, the court has stated that the larger EVs available in the market could serve as the perfect replacement. The court has asked the authorities to look into the feasibility of such a ban and to plan a phased-out transition of petrol and diesel vehicles. The court also dismissed concerns about the lack of charging infrastructure.
Such a ban would impact mass-market car buyers too, especially with the Supreme Court taking a pro-EV stance.
Future of ICE Cars
As of now, no strict deadline has been announced by the government. It is possible that mass-market ICE vehicles may also be included in the list in the future. At present, there is no information about the phasing out of mass-market petrol and diesel vehicles.
