Kawasaki Z900 Vs KTM 990 Duke: Kawasaki has been on a launch spree in the Indian market and the recent launch of Ninja 500 and Z900 proves this. Before the Z900, Kawasaki launched the 2024 iteration of the Z650 RS and Eliminator 500. We will focus on the Z900 here, which is priced at Rs 9.29 lakh (ex-showroom), a bump of Rs 9,000 over the previous version. Following the Ninja 500’s launch, we compared – Ninja 500 vs Yamaha YZF-R3, Ninja 500 vs Aprilia RS 457 and Z650RS vs Triumph Trident 660. Now, we’ll find out how the 2024 Kawasaki Z900 fares against the KTM 990 Duke, which made a global debut at 2023 EICMA.
Kawasaki Z900 Vs KTM 990 Duke: Why this comparison?
Since its introduction in 1972, the Kawasaki Z range has been offering high-performance motorcycles at relatively competitive prices. With its power-packed 948cc four-cylinder engine, the legendary Z800’s successor dominates the litre-class streetfighter segment.
However, with the new 990 Duke, KTM now aims to dethrone the reigning champion. Which of the two bikes will emerge as the winner? Let’s find out!
Design
What adds to the muscularity of the 2024 Kawasaki Z900 is a 17-litre fuel tank. List of other striking features include high-tensile trellis frame, split-type seats, an angular LED headlamp, a wide handlebar, a sleek LED taillight and a side-slung exhaust.
On the other hand, the KTM 990 Duke features split-type DRLs, a dual-pod LED headlight, a sleek LED taillamp, a sculpted fuel tank, split seats, a raised handlebar and an upswept exhaust.
Safety
In terms of rider safety, the Kawasaki Z900 and KTM 990 Duke get disc brakes on both wheels. Additionally, both motorcycles feature dual-channel ABS and traction control.
However, the KTM 990 Duke gets an edge over the Z900 with the cutting-edge 9.3MP ABS unit from Bosch. Furthermore, an adjustable inverted front fork and a preload-adjustable monoshock at the rear handles suspension duties.
Performance
The Kawasaki Z900 is powered by a 948cc, 16-valve, liquid-cooled DOHC, inline four-cylinder engine. The powerhouse is capable of churning out 123.6 hp maximum power and 98.6 Nm peak torque.
On the other hand, the KTM 990 Duke draws its juice from a new 947cc, DOHC, liquid-cooled, LC8c parallel-twin engine producing 123 hp maximum power and 103 Nm peak torque. Engines of both the motorcycles are mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox.
Price
As mentioned earlier, the 2024 Kawasaki Z900 comes with a price tag of Rs 9.29 lakh (ex-showroom). Considering the US price of $13,949 (around Rs 11.62 lakh) for the 890 Duke GP, we expect the 2024 KTM 990 Duke to carry a higher price tag. But, considering its better safety features and aggressive design, the 990 Duke offers a compelling value proposition.
Which one should you buy?
If cutting-edge safety features and a bold design is what you look for in a motorcycle, the KTM might be a good choice. However, if you prefer a classic streetfighter style and value affordability, the Z900 could be a better option. The buying decision ultimately depends on your individual needs and preferences. Here are the key differences to help you make an informed decision:
Design: With its aggressive stance, the KTM 990 Duke looks more appealing.
Safety: KTM 990 Duke features better electronic riding aids.
Performance: Both Kawasaki Z900 and KTM 990 Duke are on par in terms of performance.
Price: The 2024 KTM 990 Duke is expected to be more expensive than the Kawasaki Z900.
Availability: As of now, KTM has not revealed any plans to launch 990 Duke in India, while the Kawasaki Z900 is already here.
