Japanese manufacturer Kawasaki’s latest entrant in the sub-500cc supersport segment, the Ninja 500, has joined the Ninja 400 in the Indian portfolio of the brand. A CBU import, it costs Rs 5.24 lakh, the same as Ninja 400. However, the Ninja 500 brings with it a bigger 451cc engine, capable of churning out 45bhp at 9,000rpm and 42.6Nm at 6,000rpm. A steel trellis frame houses the engine. A 41mm telescopic fork and a gas-charged mono-shock take care of the suspension. Key features include an LCD instrument console with Bluetooth connectivity and all-LED lights.
On paper, the Kawasaki Ninja 500 seems a promising motorcycle but its price tag might be a concern if you are budget-conscious. If you are planning to buy a motorcycle but prefer affordability, then thankfully there are some other options available in the market that you might want to consider. Let’s explore Kawasaki Ninja 500 alternatives.
Yamaha R3: Don’t let engine size fool you
The Yamaha R3 is another motorcycle from a Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer. It comes with an appealing style but its 321cc engine steals the show. If you compare it with the Kawasaki Ninja 500, it has a lower cubic capacity as well as lesser peak power and torque at 42bhp and 29.5Nm. But this engine offers a combination of fuel efficiency and performance and refinement.
The Yamaha R3 has a diamond frame with a mono-shock and a USD fork. The motorcycle offers a smooth handling and riding experience. Being a CBU import, the R3 comes with a price tag of Rs 4.64 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Aprilia RS 457: Italian stallion charges in
The Aprilia RS 457 is cheaper as compared to the Kawasaki Ninja 500 and Yamaha R3 at Rs 4.10. This is because the Italian manufacturer makes it in India. Moreover, this motorcycle offers a better package. A 457cc, parallel-twin engine powers the RS 457 and generates 47.6hp and 43.5Nm.
Furthermore, the Italian beast outshines the Japanese machines when it comes to features and equipment. It boasts ride modes, traction control, Bluetooth connectivity, and a colour TFT. With the front brake being the largest of this lot, the USD for and mono-shock are preload adjustable.
The choice is yours
Well, all three supersport motorcycles – the Kawasaki Ninja 500, Yamaha R3, and Aprilia RS 457 – have their plus points in terms of engine performance, features, styling, and brand value. Choosing between them depends on your preferences, likings, and requirements.
The Ninja 400 has not been added to this list because it costs the same as its successor, the Ninja 500 while being an old bike. On the other hand, the Kawasaki Ninja 300 is under-equipped and too old to be considered for this list.
