New Delhi: Union Road, Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari will launch the Bharat New Car Assessment Program (Bharat NCAP) on August 22, informed officials. Bharat NCAP is a crucial step towards making car manufacturing safer in India.
All passenger vehicles, which are being manufactured and sold in the country will have to comply with the new safety rules. The rule will be implemented from October onwards. Automakers like Tata, Maruti Suzuki have already welcomed the government’s move.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), in an announcement on Sunday, said that the new safety measure will be a significant step towards improving road safety by increasing the safety standards for motor vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes. The announcement said that it is aimed at providing a tool to make a comparative assessment of motor accident safety available in the country’s vehicle market.
Adult and Child Safety measures
As per the announcement, under Bharat NCAP, car manufacturers can voluntarily offer their cars tested as per Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197. Based on the car’s performance in crash tests, the car model will be given adult passenger and child safety ratings. It will be exactly like the testing of cars as per Global NCAP.
The Adult and child safety measures will help customers to buy a car that has all the safety for their children
Indian cars will compete with global vehicles
The demand for the safest cars is expected to increase with the new safety norms. It will also encourage car manufacturers in the country to comply with the Bharat NCAP to make safer cars. The ministry expressed its hope that with higher safety standards, Indian cars will be able to compete better in the global market, thereby increasing the export potential of car manufacturers in the country.
