Hyundai’s Lunar Rover automobile will soon gallop on the moon. Hyundai Motor Group has commenced production of the Lunar Rover, an early development model of the Lunar Exploration Mobility Rover. The lunar rover is being manufactured in Korea with the help of an aerospace partner.
Robotics, cameras, LiDAR sensors of highest calibre
It is equipped with modern robotics, automatic driving technologies, cameras and LiDAR sensors, motors, wheels, and a driving system. It contains solar panels that allow it to be charged. Hyundai Rotem robotic technology is used.
Lunar rover to tolerate extreme temperatures
The Lunar Rover will be under 70kg in weight. The lunar rover will be designed to resist extreme temperatures in the summer, winter, and rain. It will initially be tested on the ground multiple times. The Lunar Rover will be landed near the Moon’s South Pole region.

Agreement with 6 Korean research institutes inked
The company will collaborate with six Korean research institutes in the aerospace sector to develop the rover in July 2022. Its testing is expected to be finished by the end of 2024. Following that, it might be launched by 2027.

Attempt to broaden breadth of human mobility experience
Yong Wa Kim, executive vice president and head of Hyundai Motor and Kia’s R&D Planning and Coordination Centre, stated that the Hyundai Motor Group aims to contribute to human access and expansion to the Moon. In addition, we must broaden the scope of human mobility experience. With the development of the Lunar Rover, we are moving beyond land, sea, and air mobility into space mobility.
