Hyundai has been behind their set targets for Decarbonization Aims due to lack of EV adoption in India. The increasing sales of gasoline powered SUV’s is undermining the Decarbonization efforts that Hyundai has taken. While Hyundai and KIA have been able to witness a drop in the overall emissions in their major markets of Europe and South Korea between 2018 and 2023 but in India the story takes a turn.

Hyundai as of yet sells 6 SUV’s in India, One of them being electric. Petrol Powered SUV’s account for two thirds of the total sales of Hyundai through out their line up.

While manufacturers had big plans to convert to EV in the upcoming future, its possible that they might not be able to do so due to the slow EV adoption in India. The reason behind such a slow adoption have been lack of charging infrastructure and range anxiety.

Hyundai would soon be launching their first Locally made EV in the market, the Creta Electric. And as per the officials in the brand Hyundai would soon be launching two more locally produced EV’s in India After the Creta Electric.

As of yet EV’s account for only 2% of total new car sales in India which accounts for about 4 million. The government has nascent plans to increase this proportion to 30% by 2030.
Greenpeace reports have before criticized other automakers such as Toyota and Volkswagen for their decarbonization efforts as well.

What Are Decarbonization Efforts by Manufacturers

Decarbonization is blanket term for all the measures that Manufacturers have been adapting to for CO2 emissions reduction by 90% in 2050. To achieve such an aggressive goal manufacturers would have to take profound measures for reduction of CO2 emissions.

Accelerated Adoption of Electric Vehicles

This is one of the most integral part of the whole decarbonization effort. While manufacturers have been trying their best to bring in new offerings the efforts are also dependent upon consumer demand. Hence Automakers have been planning to ramp up EV production and Sales. But this has over time become challenge for manufacturers due to lack of EV support infrastructure. Inconsistent global framework, Insufficient access to green inputs all have brought the rate of EV adoption to a unprecedented low that was not expected by manufacturers.

Similar has been the case with Hyundai which has not been able to pace up their EV offerings in the Indian market to achieve their Decarbonization goals.

But Hyundai Seems to be up and beyond and wants to compete in the market again. As is seemingly clear by their new launches the Creta Electric and Inster in the global Markets.

Creta Electric to be the Game changer

Hyundai had brought EV vehicles to India before but they were targeted for the premium segment, But as of Now Hyundai has launched its first Mass Market EV vehicle in the market. The Hyundai Creta Electric prices have not been revealed yet, but would be revealed soon at the Auto Expo. The car is powered by a 51.4 KWH battery pack as well as a 42 KWH battery pack. The range of the 51.4 KWH battery pack range was around 473 km while the range of the other battery pack is around 390km’s in a single full charge.
