New Delhi: Japanese media reports that Honda is preparing an unprecedented compact SUV for global markets. The new SUV will be smaller than the Japanese or European HR-V and will be pitted against the Toyota Yaris Cross. The report claims that Honda’s new compact SUV is set to make its world premiere next spring, between March and June 2023.
This compact SUV will be based on the current Fit or the international Jazz model. It will be powered by the same turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that also powers Thailand’s City RS.
Powering the new City RS, this engine produces 120bhp at 5,500rpm and a peak torque of 173Nm between 2,000 and 4,500rpm. A seven-speed continuously variable transmission (CVT) will be standard.
There is a possibility that Honda’s new compact SUV could get the 1.5-liter e:HEV that also powers the City hybrid and Fit. The hybrid system consists of a 98hp 1.5L petrol running on an efficient Atkinson cycle.
The drive train is also assisted by two electric motors – one works as a generator and the other as a traction motor. The maximum usable power is 126 hp and the maximum combined torque is 253 Nm (the engine offers 127 Nm and the electric motor offers 253 Nm).
Honda’s upcoming SUV for India
Honda is also said to be planning to introduce a production version of the RS concept SUV in Indonesia this month. This model will be pitted against the Toyota Raize, Daihatsu Rocky and Kia Sonet.
Honda’s new compact SUV for the Indian market will be based on the Amaze platform. The new model will compete with Hyundai Venue, Maruti Brezza, Tata Nexon, Kia Sonet and others. It is likely to share engine options with the City sedan.
