GNCAP crash tests: Three India-Made Cars Score Low! Mahindra Bolero Neo Gets Shocking 1-Star Rating
How Safe Are These 3 Cars?

Gone are the days when people used to prefer looks, appeal and luxury in cars. Back then, shiny paints and plush interiors were the ultimate car goals. Well now, safety is the priority for many buyers. The crash tests conducted by the Global NCAP on several cars reveal how safe the vehicle is for its occupants. In the latest round of Global NCAP crash tests, three India-made cars performed poorly.

Mahindra Bolero Neo – 1 Star

The popular Mahindra Bolero Neo with a ‘shocking’ 1-star rating sits at the bottom of the list of India-made cars that have scored low at the crash tests. The test model was equipped with two airbags, seat belt pre-tensioners, seat belt reminders, and load limiters. During the tests, it obtained 20.26 points out of 34 for the protection of adult occupants and for the protection of child occupants, it secured 12.71 points out of 49.

Honda Amaze – 2 Stars

It obtained 27.85 points out of 34 for the protection of adult occupants and 8.58 points for the protection of child occupants. The test model was equipped with a seatbelt pre-tensioner, a load-limiter and dual front airbags. The Amaze also comes with ISOFIX anchors and a seat belt reminder for all seats.

Honda responded to the crash test results in an official statement: “The South African-spec second-generation Amaze has already been tested as four-star by GNCAP in 2019. The latest test basis new protocol shows that the total score is of five-star level. However, mainly due to the requirement of certain equipment like Electronic Stability Control and side curtain airbags, it resulted in a lower rating.”

Kia Carens – 3 Stars

The Kia Carens received 3 stars in the latest GNCAP crash tests. Tested twice, the car got zero stars during the first test because it was found that the neck had been under heavy impact. Kia improved the restraint systems on the Carens and therefore it scored three stars in the second test.

The Carens obtained 22.07 out of 34 points in adult occupation protection, while the score in child occupation protection was 41 out of 49 points. The crash test showed that the bodyshell of the car was unstable and could not withstand additional stresses.

Standard safety equipment on this car included ABS with EBD, six airbags, seat-belt reminders, seat belt pre-tensioners and load limiters, ESC, and ISOFIX child-seat anchorage points.
