As per a recent News report Ford has confirmed that its developing range extender Hybrids to gain a larger share of the over all affordable EV mobility market. The brand would be focusing on REXs Vehicles rather than EV’s for the upcoming future term.
REX vehicles are known for their use of series Hybrid powertrains to power the vehicle. The Electric motor drives the wheels and a petrol engine is used solely to recharge the battery pack. The petrol engine works as a range extender. Similar tech has been sued before as well in cars such as Nissan Note and Maruti Suzuki Fronx Hybrid.
EV Sales Slump the Reason Behind The Shift
As per the sales data that has been released online it has become apparent that Ford’s EV sales have dropped 9% globally in 2024. This has been the result even after the manufacturer has launched new models such as the Explorer as well as the Capri in the respective market.
The global revenue’s earned by the EV arm of the brand witnessed a revenue plummet of around 35 % and was forced to provide discounts on Mustang Mach E SUV, The F150 and several other vehicles. Such results have pushed the brand to consider investing in Hybrid’s rather than EV’s

As per the statement that Ford’s CEO Mr Farley reported that users were reluctant to buy an big electric vehicle and range anxiety are some of the common features that have led to the EV sales plummet.
Global Focus shifts to Hybrid Production
While the global EV sales slump has not been that evident in the Indian market, several indigenous manufacturers have announced plans to launch Hybrid vehicles that can bring better sales towards manufacturers. Honda has been considering the ZRV Hybrid for an Indian Launch. And beyond that Mahindra has been planning to to launch the new XUV 3X0 which is expected to arrive in 2026. The like of carmakers like Toyota and Maruti Suzuki have been looking at the launch of new Range Extender EV’s in India.
