In 2023, India recorded a significant jump in the sales of electric vehicles (EVs). The total EV sales increased from 1.02 million in 2022 to 1.53 million in 2023, a whopping 50% year-on-year jump in sales. The overall market share of electric vehicle sales in the total automobile industry also increased three times from 1.75% in 2021 to 6.38% in 2023. Indian government’s flagship EV promotion scheme (FAME II) played an important role in this significant uptick. According to the EV subsidy scheme, consumers receive financial incentives for buying electric vehicles in India. It reduces the upfront purchasing cost of electric cars in India by around 25-30%.
The EV industry expects to sell 2 million units in 2024. As a supporter of EV30@30, India envisions 30% or more sales of new electric vehicles by 2030. According to a report, the sale of EVs in India is expected to increase by 35% during 2023-2032. The annual sales volume is expected to reach 27.2 million units by 2032.
