The 2025 Mahindra Thar facelift has been launched with several upgrades, including new features, cosmetic tweaks, and interior changes, while retaining its mechanicals. From design and interior to features, specifications, and price, here’s a detailed comparison between the old Mahindra Thar and the newly launched facelift model.
2025 Mahindra Thar Facelift, old vs new
Design
The earlier generation Thar stood out for its tough design, with elements like chunky bumpers, detachable roof panels, squared wheel arches, the signature seven-slat grille, and other rugged touches. In the facelift, Mahindra has kept these familiar traits but refined them to create a fresher appearance.
The grille now comes finished in body colour, blending more seamlessly with the front. Adding contrast are the redesigned dual-tone bumpers with a silver accent. Mahindra has also rolled out two new shades – Battleship Grey and Tango Red, the latter taking the place of the old Rage Red option.
Features
The previous model included features like steering-mounted controls, manual AC, roof-mounted speakers, and a 7-inch touchscreen.
The 2025 Mahindra Thar facelift, on the other hand, brings in several updates such as an electric fuel-lid opener, Type-C charging ports for both front and rear passengers, and rear AC vents. The infotainment unit is now larger at 10.25 inches, paired with a redesigned interface that works with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. In addition, the new Thar also comes with a reversing camera, along with a rear wiper and washer.
Interior
The interior of the earlier Thar was built to handle both everyday driving and off-road conditions, making it a practical option. It included roof-mounted speakers, a touchscreen infotainment system, and washable floor panels. Even with its simple layout, it still offered the comfort expected from a modern SUV while being tough enough to face rugged terrain.
Mahindra has added a set of interior upgrades, such as a new steering wheel. The facelift version now includes grab handles on the A-pillars with ‘THAR’ branding for both driver and front passenger – earlier, this was only on the co-driver’s side. A sliding armrest with storage has also been introduced. Automatic variants now feature a dead pedal. In addition, the power window switches are now placed on the door armrests instead of the centre console.
Powertrain
The facelifted Thar sees no change in its mechanical setup. It continues with the 1.5-litre diesel engine producing 118PS/300Nm, a 2.2-litre diesel delivering 132PS/300Nm, and a 2.0-litre turbo petrol making 150PS/320Nm. Gearbox choices include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic.
The rear-wheel drive option comes with the 1.5-litre diesel (manual only) and the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol (automatic only). The four-wheel drive setup, on the other hand, is paired with the larger diesel engine and the turbo-petrol, both available with manual and automatic gearboxes.
Price and rivals
The previous model was priced between Rs 11.35 lakh and Rs 17.60 lakh (ex-showroom). The 2025 Mahindra Thar facelift comes with a price range of Rs 9.99 lakh to Rs 16.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Both models continue to compete with the same rivals, including the Force and Maruti Jimny.
