New Delhi: Korean automaker Hyundai is gearing up to launch a wide range of new cars including the new Ai3 mini SUV, the facelifted Creta, the Ioniq 5 EV, the new Carnival and the new generation Verna. In fact, the new generation Verna sedan has already been tested several times in the Indian market. The 2023 Hyundai Verna sedan will come with significant design changes and an all-new interior along with new engine options.

Diesel Sedan

With the upcoming stricter norms for real driving emissions, most automakers are planning to phase out diesel engines from the Indian market. Honda has already decided to discontinue the 1.5-litre diesel engine that powers the City and Amaze sedans. On the other hand, Maruti Suzuki, Renault-Nissan and Volkswagen Group have already withdrawn their diesel engines from our market.

On the other hand, Hyundai has decided to go ahead with the diesel engine variant from the Indian market. We previously reported that Hyundai will stop making the i20 diesel from 2023. Most of the i20’s sales come from the petrol engine options and the diesel makes up less than 10 percent. Hyundai is upgrading the 1.5-litre diesel engine to meet real-world emissions standards.

This engine will continue to power the Venue, Creta, Verna and Alcazar. The venue will get a 100PS 1.5-litre diesel engine, while the new Verna, Creta and Alcazar will continue to get the 115PS Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT) engine. The Venue’s 1.5L diesel comes with a fixed geometry turbo. Apart from the diesel engine, the new Verna is likely to be offered with a 1.4L turbo petrol and a 1.5L NA petrol engine.

Larger Size

The spy shots confirm that the new generation Hyundai Verna will grow, which will be reflected in the increased space inside the cabin. The larger size and spacious cabin will help the new Verna compete with the Honda City, Skoda Slavia and VW Virtus. The new Verna’s larger dimensions, high-end features and more powerful engine eliminate the need for a standalone executive sedan in our market.

Design Features

Internally called Project BN7, the new Verna will share styling cues from the next-generation Elantra sedan. The sedan will be designed based on Hyundai’s ‘Sensuous Sportiness’ design language, which we have already seen on the new Elantra and Tucson. It will have a new grille with a parametric pattern and wide integration of turn signals. The new cascading front grille comes with an integrated full-LED headlamp and an aggressive bumper.

The spy shots reveal that the new Verna will sport fastback-like styling with a tapered roof. The rear profile is likely to feature a high-tech “H-Tail Lamp” that creates the shape of Hyundai’s flying H logo, a wing-shaped lower bumper treatment and a tapered roofline to enhance the coupe-like appearance.

The 2023 Hyundai Verna sedan will feature a fully digital instrument panel and a redesigned infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay wireless connectivity. The sedan is likely to feature ventilated front seats. The biggest update will come in the form of ADAS ADAS (advanced driver assist system) technology. ADAS features will include forward collision mitigation, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic assist and driver attention monitoring.

Launch Timeline

The new Verna sedan is expected to be unveiled in January at the Auto Expo 2023. The exact timeline of the launch is yet to be revealed; however, reports claim that Hyundai has fast-tracked the development of the new Verna sedan. We expect the new model to go on sale in Q2 2023, around April to May.
